Heirloom portraits of your little one. Timeless. Classic. Active. Natural. Photos you’ll be eager to print, proud to display and pass on for generations. iPhone snapshots are wonderful to document the everyday, but it’s time for elevated more polished portraits. Images that dig a little deeper. Designed to draw out your child’s true personality and capture the details you never want to forget.

But how do they happen?

When you think of getting photos taken of your child, what do you think of? A lot of people think of JC Penny portraits that are formal and stiff. My philosophy is the exact opposite. The way I take amazing portraits of children is focused on one thing- letting them have fun and be themselves! The truth is - we want photos of our children that accurately depict them and their personalities not posed photos that are causing them to suppress who they are. Too often we get caught in the habit of telling our child to say "cheeeeeeese" which does nothing, but produce forced smiles and make our child feel like they have to perform.

I am not about that life, and I am here to convince you that you shouldn't be either.

Now, there are ways to elevate the portraits and make them more polished- you can do this with styling and setting. I am a huge fan of incorporating color theory as a way to really make images pop artistically.

I am also here to brainstorm the perfect location for your session. Sometimes- children are most comfortable at home (especially two - three year olds). There is something really special about capturing a child in their space. It is almost like a time capsule of their world.

Activity Based

Something that you might want portraits of is your child doing one of their favorite activities. This can be anything from playing an instrument, sport, going to the park, getting some ice cream, drawing with chalk on the driveway- there are really endless possibilities. My job is to take those every day activities and elevate them into artistic portraits.

Ownership

Asking your child what they would like to do for their photoshoot is also a great way to get them excited. Incorporate what THEY love and what THEY enjoy doing and you will end up with photos that have happy children.

Let go

When photo day comes try your best to let go. I have two wild ones of my own and am super flexible with child behavior and moods. If your child doesn't like something or want to do something- we will do something else. I use lots of games, silly songs, and prompts to make your child feel comfortable and get the images we are looking for.

The special traits you want to hold onto forever. Isn’t it bittersweet that they grow so quickly? This is the next best thing to freezing time, mama
